Our story

Bold | Joyful | Ethical | Sustainable

Our luxury throws and cushions are made with premium and sustainable materials, from ethically sourced cashmere to recycled lambswool, and are hand finished by local specialists to the highest standards.

Woven on Jacquard looms in limited runs in Scotland and England, each creation tells an uplifting story inspired by our passions, in carefully considered colour combinations.

Behind the name

Old and new | Heavy and light | Architecture and textiles | Function and joy

Granite + Smoke is Lindsey Hesketh and Claire Canning, life-long friends and design professionals. The studio, founded in 2019, draws from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds, Lindsey in architecture and Claire in interiors and textiles. Playful, graphic and modern, Granite + Smoke offers beautifully crafted and responsibly made luxury products. Made in the UK.

The name evokes The Granite City  (Aberdeen) +  The Big Smoke (London); mythical cities where Lindsey + Claire live and design - two elements in contrast and harmony.

Sustainable design

Past | Present | Future

Granite + Smoke creates contemporary enduring textiles that are part of history + future inspired.

Our mills

Our lambswool and cashmere throws are crafted at a Scottish mill dating back to 1866. Working with historical weaving experts using a combination of traditional and modern techniques, each one of our blankets goes through twelve processes to ensure it is the best it can be.

Our recycled lambswool blankets are woven at a 150 year old mill in the north of England; the last remaining traditional weaver in a town that in the late 1920s boasted over 100,000 looms.

Mindful manufacturing

We are committed to preserving traditional crafts and skills, working with Scottish and UK manufacturers who embed positive social and environmental principles. With fair-trade principles at the heart of the production process, we choose partners who support local supply chains and prioritise communities and worker well-being.  We limit our waste by weaving short runs & collecting all excess weaving salvage to transform into other products.

Our materials

Recycled lambswool

Our yarns are made with 100% recycled post-consumer textile waste from the fashion industry; 70% recycled lambswool + 30% recycled other yarns.

Worldwide, 25 million tons of clothing go to landfill every year. Circular production and textile recycling reduces the use of precious raw materials and reduces landfill. By recycling and trying to close the loop of fashion, we make high quality products with a longer life span.

Lambswool + cashmere

100% natural, renewable and biodegradable, our ethically sourced lambswool and cashmere is certified and meets the highest standards of animal welfare, environmental care, and social sustainability. It is sourced working with accredited suppliers from leading organisations such as the Sustainable Fibre Alliance.

Our lambswool is mulesing free and certified by https://sustainawool.com.au/ sourced from farms that are committed to the best practices in terms of land and animal welfare.

Packaging

Our paper & packaging is part recycled and sourced from FSC certified mills, printed with non-toxic inks and is fully recyclable. We keep packaging material to a minimum and our GOTS organic cotton dust bags protect & extend the life of every design. We say no to plastic in our production and packaging process and yes to eliminating manufacturing waste.
